Offered here is a scarce copy of Work and Culture, a lecture delivered by noted English artist, typographer, and social critic Eric Gill before the Royal Society of Arts in London, April 1938. Published the same year by John Stevens of Newport, Rhode Island, this edition reproduces Gill’s talk with minor emendations.

Gill, one of the most influential British printmakers and type designers of the early 20th century, is remembered for his engravings, essays, and controversial social philosophy. This booklet includes text, as well as an engraving reproduced (by permission) from his earlier essay Unemployment (Faber & Faber, 1933).
