Scarce original 1976 first printing of Black Legacy, Volume I, published by the Indianapolis Black Bicentennial Committee to commemorate the U.S. Bicentennial and honor the achievements of African Americans in Indiana history. The booklet features profiles, historical essays, and lists of pioneering Black citizens — educators, inventors, community leaders, and cultural figures — who shaped the state’s social and civic landscape.
Includes acknowledgments to Mayor William H. Hudnut, Jefferson National Life Insurance Company, and local broadcasters such as WTLC Radio and “Bishop” Al Hobbs, significant figures in Indianapolis’s African American community.
Softcover, 116 pages. Illustrated cover art signed “C. Adams.” Measures approximately 9” x 6”.
Condition: Moderate cover toning and some staining as shown, interior clean and complete, staples tight.
A very uncommon publication documenting regional Black history during the Bicentennial era; institutional copies are catalogued in a few Indiana archives, but it is rarely seen in private hands.
